While drones have always existed in the form of aeromodelling hobby clubs as well as a part of the National Cadet Corps (NCC) for decades, their commercial and indigenous component-level development has faced significant hurdles. We believe these barriers existed primarily due to the regulatory complexities and national security concerns. This aspect has historically limited private investment and encouraged reliance on imports, hindering the growth of domestic capabilities. A pivotal shift occurred in 2018 when the Government of India proactively championed the development of a robust drone ecosystem, actively involving the private sector. This resulted in the landmark Gazette Notification of Indian Drone Rules 2021 with its subsequent amendments that laid a reformatory foundation to the prevalent regulatory landscape. Concurrently, a revitalised Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model has emerged, with governmental bodies encouraging private industry participation in policy formulation alongside capability development through organisations like FICCI, CII, and DFI. This concerted effort has propelled the Robotics and Deep-Tech sector into a period of remarkable growth, marked by numerous startups, industry-academia collaborations, and defence partnerships. Recognising this as an opportune moment, the DTEA has been formed to provide a sector-agnostic platform dedicated to collaborative and equitable growth within the drone industry.
Our mission is a multifaceted one that encompasses the promotion of technology evangelism and adoption of best practices. It also includes aspects of knowledge sharing and advocacy for all Stakeholders without bias. So the DTEA intends to serve as a central hub for developing and disseminating industry best practices, organising forums and events for invaluable knowledge exchange among stakeholders and beyond. This will accelerate the widespread understanding and integration of drone technology across diverse sectors, moving beyond a singular focus on defence. We are also committed to ensuring that the voices of all industry players, including startups and MSMEs that may have limited market capitalisation or access to professional knowledge, are heard and considered in policy discussions and developmental initiatives.
